the path to here
Her journey began in 1995 as an aid in a preschool classroom in Bridgeport CT. Where she had the esteemed privilege of learning from some of the best teachers in the business. The school was a federally funded public magnet school, a prototype with the odds stacked against it. The best teachers were hired from New York, and they came ready to unload their Bank Street philosophies. Renee wasn't only inspired by the teachers, she was also influenced and inspired by some of the greatest artists in children's music. The likes of Raffi, Hap Palmer, and Ella Jenkins. Renee quickly understood the powerful role music could play in early learning, if used properly. She was also, at this time, heavily involved in theater arts. Attending classes at New England Actors' Theater in New Haven CT, performing in local theater productions, doing stand up comedy, and also performing as a member of an improv troupe. In 1999 Renee Moved to San Francisco to give signing professionally, a shot. After joining the band that inspired her move (a band that she was a member of for 6 years), working as a singing waitress for 2 years, traveling throughout northern California with a Children's Theater group, performing educational / musical [plays in the round] at elementary schools, Renee returned to the preschool classroom. She attended City College and studied to become a lead classroom teacher. Working in the classroom Renee began noticing a need for engaging, dynamic, and fun music teachers that encouraged self-expression and physical movement, she began writing the kind of music she wished her students had. This led to the writing and release of her first children’s album in 2005, and the launch of what was then called Renee's Here!—now known as Walking Sideways. Soon after its release Renee moved to CO to join her wife (then girlfriend) they lived in Boulder for 2.5 years. In Boulder Renee promptly attained employment as a preschool teacher, and within 6 months began building her music business there. Teaching music classes to various preschools, performing on the children's stage at the Boulder Creek Festival, Boulder opened their hearts to her. She performed (funk cover songs) at Law School Celebrations, she started a band and took one-on-one lessons in Pro-Tools, an audio recording software, from a prominent figure in audio recording, Another invaluable learning experience. After Boulder They moved back to California
Since then, Renee has written and produced three more CDs. Two of them being for children but also in 2014 she Released her contemporary CD Doin' It. The first two CDs for kids focus on supporting developmental milestones through music and movement, while her most recent release, Got Tricks (written after her 2nd son was born) leans into the art of musical storytelling. Similarly to Vroom, Got Tricks was produced by Kimo Ball. Renee wrote the songs on acoustic guitar and Kimo added 98% of the rest of the album. All other instruments, with the exception of, saxophone and some piano on Parade Song, and some additional drumming, were played by Kimo. Got Tricks also features an original picture book that Renee authored and illustrated that brings Track #2, Life on the Pond, vividly to life using felt, blending music, art, and literacy into a rich, multi-sensory experience for young learners. Today, she offers engaging multi-class assemblies, interactive concerts, birthday party entertainment, and storytelling performances at libraries and farmers markets.
Renee’s philosophy is simple: Children learn best when they’re having fun. Through her music and creative storytelling, she helps children grow, express themselves, and connect with the world around them—one joyful song at a time.
